I love the individuality found in home interiors today. There are a
lot of “right choices” for the house; the key is to find the right
choice for you and your home. The challenge for a designer is to tap
into breadth of experience, in order to offer individualized interior
design solutions for each client.

And one trend
in interior design you dislike
I don’t believe in the “trust me school of design”. Customers learn
to trust you as you listen to them, answer their questions completely
(not only sharing your suggested solution but explaining why you are
recommending it), and keep them informed during the process. Designers
who believe they ought to leave their “signature design” in every home
may get away with it, but they often leave a large wake for others to
clean up.

What
decorating tip would you suggest to any customer?
Consider a small touch of whimsy in each room. It relaxes your
guests and reveals your confident sense of style. After narrowing down
fabric choices, always look at them from across the room, not only from
up close. For a new look at the next fabric, to clear your vision, walk
out, and then back into the room.

What advice can you offer someone before they start a home or office
interior design project?
Take the time to do it right, and start planning well ahead of any
deadlines. Know your own buying style. If selection decisions are easy
for you, allow extra time for a first appointment. If I ask enough
questions, we will spend less time looking for the right fabrics and
designs.
If you are a researcher by
temperament, look at pictures and displays, so you will be more
comfortable as we focus your choices. Share the pictures that you love
even if you are unsure what it is about them that is so appealing. We
will be able to see connections, or ask about specific elements in the
pictures to find out if those are important details.

Should I paint first?
Ideally painting is selected last, and done first. Your paint color
will contribute much more to the room if coordinated with other rooms,
and taken from the rug and fabric choices for the room. The actual
painting can be done while other elements of the room are on order.

What should homeowners avoid at all costs when beginning a design
project?
It is easy to be distracted by colors, fabrics, patterns and
details, with the choices available today. The feeling you want the room
to have when complete, and practical functions of the space, are
critical considerations. Share with your designer these goals, so we can
advise you if a choice is leading you away from that goal. Avoid the
designer or decorator who advises without asking questions first. Better
communication leads to better results.
Space Planning is an important
part of your project as well. Placement of items within a room affect
the balance and functionality, and the pleasure afforded by the space.
In remodeling projects, advise us of any built-ins that are already
planned, but not yet installed. If you are looking ahead to aging in
place, bringing in a designer in the early stages of your remodeling or
new construction will ensure you can continue to enjoy your home for

What do you
enjoy doing in your spare time?
I love gardening with perennials, another way to work with color,
pattern, and texture. I also like hand sewing: embroidery, beadwork --
sewing that is similar to drawing, with complex materials. I enjoy
poetry reading, and singing. I give thanks for the many blessings in my
life by serving in a variety of ministries in my church
