Revolutionary! Award-Winning Guest Bedroom in Historic Washington DC
This guest bedroom is located at historic Anderson House, home of the Revolutionary War Institute, and the Society of the Cincinnati, descendants of Revolutionary War officers. Their guest bedrooms are named for the original 13 States, and this room is the Pennsylvania Room. This project, which tells the story of the history of Pennsylvania in the Revolutionary War, was awarded first place in Whole Room Integration at the 2014 International Window Coverings Expo Envision Design competition.
The first step was to replace the existing portrait over the marble fireplace with this portrait of a Pennsylvanian officer. The original portrait was too large to fit between the sconces, but digitally reproduced and framed in a gilded heavy frame, it is true to the original work still in the Society of the Cincinnati Archives.

The custom window treatment design took advantage of the room's height in creating a military uniform inspired custom window treatment. The Society of the Cincinnati emblem was embroidered on the center pelmet, and Epaulettes created out of several trims. The gold banding and large nailhead buttons evoke the leather collars of the Pennsylvania uniforms.
New art was added which told the story of Pennsylvania's Naval contributions during the Revolutionary War.
Adjacent to the bedroom is a bathroom, and a closet turned into a small desk alcove, also featuring the Naval story.
The Pennsylvania Room bathroom included new wallpaper, a new skirt for the original sink, new shower curtain, and plates and art prints of the Battle of Brandywine and other engagements.
